Cracking Codes – An Alternative Learning Track

As a society we face several challenges that call for change - a shift in norm. We believe creativity and artists play a fundamental role in questioning the status quo and shape new ways of thinking.

Cracking Codes – An Alternative Learning Track, a new DAR series that aims to create new knowledge together by learning from pioneers, visionaries and legends in the making. Focussing on how to crack codes in different fields and shift the norm. For the first edition DAR joined forces with fashion brand Daily Paper to create an intimate learning experience with the legendary artist Hassan Hajjaj.

As the warm up of a series of sessions by DAR that focus on how to crack codes in different fields, through creativity, this series touches on creative choices, hurdles and finance. This isn’t your typical talk, think of it as an alternative approach to learning, where a curated group comes together to share, reflect and connect.

Hassan, Daily Paper and DAR amplify a new norm, we crack codes by staying true to the realities we see and know to have great value. We amplify them by building ecosystems. This alternative learning track and the way it’s organised seeks to learn from peers.

Cracking Codes with Hassan Hajjaj

Legendary artist Hassan Hajjaj, whose practice spans over 3 decades. Born in 1961 and now based both in London and Marrakech, Hassan mixes everyday objects, Moroccan culture, African and Caribbean heritage with contemporary Western influences.

From the early days of Hassan’s career to the pivotal moments that shaped his journey, the session delved deep into what it takes in finding your creative path. He shared personal insights from his own journey, offering a fresh perspective on navigating the complexities of creativity and career.

As the conversation, led by Samira Larouci, shifted to the business side of art, Hassan’s approach to turning his craft into making a living opened up a rich discussion about the realities of the art world and beyond, and how artists can transition from simply creating to sustaining their practice.

Held at the streetwear brand’s HQ in Amsterdam, the evening was a true celebration of creative minds getting together to exchange ideas, expand knowledge, and evolve.

Stay tuned for more sessions as we continue to Crack Codes.

“I felt like I was in the right place, with the right people. The event and Q&A with Hassan reaffirmed the power of ‘playing around’ – as creatives, we need to be part of an ecosystem, find the right hustle, and create that free space to play. That balance is everything. Seeing how myself, Hassan, Daily Paper, and DAR can take our work seriously while keeping it playful – that’s the key.”
