For a long time, garments from outside the Western fashion world have been dismissed as traditional, folksy or Oriental. MOḌA shows that the one-sided understanding of fashion is a thing of the past. The exhibition is an introduction to the immense versatility of Moroccan fashion in a contemporary context, not attempting to be comprehensive.
You can’t ignore it, contemporary makers with Moroccan roots are setting the tone. This exhibition is just as layered and multifaceted as the creations on display. In MOḌA – ‘fashion’ in colloquial Moroccan and Tamazight – fashion and art merge. It brings together the artistic work and personal stories of more than forty internationally recognised names and local talents. As fashion statements, their creations are both explicit and subtle. These game changers from Morocco and the Moroccan diaspora in the Netherlands redefine fashion, each from a unique perspective, but connected by their relationship to fashion, the creative process and Morocco.
From Cosmopolitan to Monumental
MOḌA captures the many layers and complexity of Moroccan (diasporic) cultures. The exhibition, curated by Ninke Bloemberg and Zineb Seghrouchni, comprises about one hundred works. Leading you across seven inspiring themes – from the monumental to the cosmopolitan – that showcase the powerful blend and richness of Moroccan influence across time and cultures. A space where fashion and art merge.
