An irreversible movement is underway in the international art world: a NEW WAVE of artists is making itself heard. Driven by lived experiences and local ecosystems, this strong current addresses global themes such as textile pollution, climate inequality, cultural identity and migration.
NEW WAVE artists live in and between different countries, continents and cultures, breaking through traditional divisions of ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture to create work that puts the everyday at centre stage. Life-size installations by The Nest Collective, Ameneh Solati, Yuro Moniz, Nifemi Marcus Bello, Elejandro Martinez and Marga Weimans embody this NEW WAVE. Curated by DAR Cultural Agency founder Zineb Seghrouchni and on show in Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, this exhibition is inspired by art practices that create new knowledge. Just as a stone dropped into water causes ever-expanding ripples, so the stories of these artists and those who came before them resonate further into society. Through six unique, lifesize installations stories are told that interweave different continents and histories, the present and the future.
New Wave the documentary
Check out the documentary capturing the building up of the installations, in which the materials speak and the artists reflect on their sources and what home is to them.
New Wave Saturday
During New Wave Saturday the installations come to live through a series of intimate gatherings in the installations. A program developed by the artists, such as a workshop wirebending, screening of the film ‘The Marshes’ by Kassem Hawal and an intergenerational talk about hair(care).
