The Vitrine Project: 5 Vitrines, 5 Artists, curated by DAR Cultural Agency at the national monument Groot Handelsgebouw (GHG), next to the Central Station of Rotterdam! But what exactly are these vitrines?
The vitrines are life-sized glass cabinets, arranged in a unique 8-angle shape, which were designed and built as an integral part of the building’s original architecture. They were originally intended to showcase and communicate the commercial trade and companies that once occupied the building. For many years these vitrines remained empty and underused – until now. Recognizing their potential, the building’s owner, Jamestown, decided to breathe new life into these monumental vitrines. To do so, Jamestown invited DAR Cultural Agency to curate 5 vitrines. DAR curated a selection of works and activities in the building’s monumental vitrines, by 5 talented artists: Cristal De La Cruz, Charlie Koolhaas, Said Belhadj, Yoko Negi, and Lua.
This isn’t just another art exhibition. It’s a refreshing way to make design, art and architecture cross paths with the workspace and everyday life. More than 450 companies have their offices in the Groothandelsgebouw and it’s this community of thousands of people who move through the building daily, transforming the office experience into something new and engaging.
