Vaulx-en-Velin was once a rural village before it grew into a dense urban zone in the 1960s and ’70s, home to workers and immigrant families. The neighborhood shown here, Mas du Taureau, carries a heavy history—marked in 1990 by riots after the tragic killing of a child struck by a police car. The building in this painting is where the artist grew up, just before it was demolished. In the foreground stands a figure of the city, holding a police helmet. Recalling the BRAV-M brigades, a revival of motorcycle police units created in 1969, known for their extreme violence and to be responsible for the 1986 killing of Malik Oussekine. “It’s a reminder of where we come from, and of the courage it takes to push back against oppression.”
