Haori & Kimono

request information

In the coastal town of Yunotsu, Shinya Kobayashi has inherited and revived several abandoned kominka, traditional wooden houses, breathing new life into structures long left to time. Kominka encapsulates both the challenges of Japan’s aging, depopulated countryside and the promise of regeneration rooted in its traditions. Within their quiet rooms he uncovered hidden treasures: dressers filled with heirloom silk kimonos, many over a century old and preserved in remarkable condition. Once everyday garments, these silks now speak of a world almost vanished. Too often forgotten, they are given new relevance through transformation.

The Kimono and the Haori, a short silk jacket traditionally worn over kimono, have been lightly reimagined for a modern silhouette. Each piece, handcrafted by Mujun, turns these “lost” textiles into contemporary garments that carry the spirit of home, memory, and renewal. Woven from the past into the present, they form a living archive of Japanese fashion and craft. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind work of art, redesigned exclusively for Curated by DAR.

“These garments, once considered everyday attire, are now nearly impossible to reproduce. Too often, they are forgotten, dismissed as relics of the past. By reimagining them as jackets, we restore their relevance and invite them back into daily life.”

About Shinya

Shinya Kobayashi is a multidisciplinary practitioner dedicated to sustaining Japan’s craft traditions and cultural heritage, with a special focus on regional communities. In 2011, he founded a design firm, Coelacanth Shokudo, to address the challenges facing Japan’s declining craft industries. His work spans branding and product development, collaborations with local artisans, and training the next generation of craftspeople. In 2016, he launched the label Mujun (meaning “paradox”) to share Japanese traditional crafts internationally and build global partnerships. In 2020, Kobayashi acquired 20 hectares of mountain land in Shimane, aiming to foster a circular economy through artisan training and the revitalization of satoyama, the cyclical relationship between people and nature. His work has been widely exhibited, including at SaloneSatellite in Milan (2009, 2013), the Setouchi Triennale (2010), and Singapore Design Week (2025).
