The furniture we sit on, the clothes we wear, the advertisements we encounter – they all tell the story of the Netherlands. But what truly makes Dutch Design ‘Dutch’? And do the iconic designs we celebrate really tell the full story? Are we overlooking essential objects and creations? And what hidden narratives lie behind them?
Design critic Jeroen Junte invited thirty professionals from the worlds of design, fashion, and architecture to contribute to a multi-voiced list of design icons in which all Dutch people can see themselves reflected. From artistic prototypes to everyday objects and graphic activism, New Icons connects surprising historical insights with design. The result is a stimulating exploration of a more diverse, inclusive, and sustainable vision of what Dutch Design was, is, and can become. Featuring interviews with Marleen Stikker (Waag Futurelab), Martine Postma (Repair Café), Yassine Salihine (chief curator Design Museum Den Bosch), Bas van Abel (founder Fairphone), Zineb Seghrouchni (founder of DAR Cultural Agency) and Abderrahmane Trabsini (founder Daily Paper).
