Is tourism more important than the social living environment of people? Angelista explores this question through photo compositions in collage form in the series Paradox Paradise. In the photos, we see places in Curaçao that have fallen into disrepair, locations that are overlooked by the average tourist. Yet this is part of the actual reality of Curaçao, where a mixed group of island residents live on or around these places. The cut-out shapes in the different layers of the photos reveal urban landscapes, sometimes intertwined behind the contours of people. The context of the environment is not explicitly shown, nor are the faces of the portrayed individuals, but the spirit of the people does leave its mark on the composition and the landscape.

About Serana

Serana Angelista is a photographic artist and graphic designer whose work moves in the liminal space between Curaçao and the Netherlands. In her practice, she explores the psychological influence of Afro-migration culture and unravels the cognitive processes through which she experiences her dual nationality. Using personal photography, text, and experimental printmaking, she examines the multifaceted nature of her existence. A central question is how her memory of Curaçao relates to its physical reality. She translates this into a visual language where photography is not documentary but suggestive, testing the boundaries between reality and imagination. Her work has been exhibited at leading museums and appears in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Stedelijk Museum Schiedam. Her work has been featured in GLAMCULT, OneWorld, DAMN Magazine, ELLE, and VOGUE.
